To stop in time would have been impossible. Noelle Rosenberg stomped on the brake and downshifted, but it was too late. The enormous man stood in the middle of the road just around the sharp curve. His long, golden hair fluttered about his shoulders, the locks tossed angrily in the winds of the snowstorm. By the light of her high-beam headlights, she caught the Christmas-green gleam of his eyes. The fine, well-proportioned bone structure of the handsome face made her think of a rugged movie star upon the screen of her windshield. A vague flash of familiarity swirled in her brain, spiraling down to twist around her heart, but she didn't have time to explore the shocking sensation.
"Shit. Get out of the way!"
Her sports car did a fishtail, swinging the fender closer to him. The tires groaned hideously on the snow-packed pavement, and she pumped the brake harder. He didn't flinch, didn't so much as move one sinewy muscle. The massive body, uncloaked and clad in a simple lumberjack shirt and jeans, seemed to fill the entire width of the road. She knew if she didn't kill him first, the force of the impact against his unyielding form would at the very least, do extensive damage to her prized car.
Like hitting an enormous buck. Big, proud, majestic...the beast guarding his forest.
The ridiculous thought escaped her by necessity. She gripped the steering wheel and swerved, but not before her left front end swiped him. Noelle's pulse pounded deafeningly in her ears. Her mouth went dry and the flavor of eggnog burst onto her tongue. Oddly, she could smell the overwhelming aromas of cinnamon and roast duck, cranberry salad and peppermint.
"What the hell...?"
As if he'd been a figment of her imagination, her car seemed to slice right through him. She didn't have time to ponder the eerie observation. The tires spun on an icy patch. The rear end pivoted around toward the direction she'd been heading...to her parent's home in Branson where she'd planned to hole up and lick her wounds from a broken engagement.
Noelle's right foot slipped from the brake and she gasped. She jammed the clutch down, her left leg trembled. Defiantly, the car lurched and arced to the side in a wild tailspin jolt. Unable to fight the centrifugal force, she screamed, realizing too late that she'd forgotten to fasten her seat belt. Airborne, she soared in slow motion, weightless in the deafening quiet of the moment. Time dragged on in her brain, endless, almost orgasmic, as she catapulted toward the windshield. Her thighs scraped the bottom of the steering wheel and her breath whooshed from her lungs as her chest hit the top arch. She threw up her hands and turned her head in defense of the inevitable.
At that very second, a deep, resonant voice echoed in her head.
Finally you've come back to me. Die, Noelle, die. It's okay. Don't be afraid to die.
